My Bedtime Routine (including what I need to cut out)

When I get ready for bed I have a solid routine, and though it’s probably not as optional for achieving the best sleep as it could be it is consistent and I can’t fall asleep unless I do all the necessary steps.

I know that I can’t be the only one with a bedtime routine, but so far I’ve come across a lot of Morning Routine posts- and thought I’d share the opposite side of the spectrum.

Here’s what I need to do in order to prepare for a good nights sleep.

Take my makeup off

The first thing that I do is take off my makeup. I feel so icky when I don’t do it, and my skin really pays the price. I use Garnier Micellar All-in-1 Cleansing Water and my makeup comes off so easily, plus I don’t have to wash my face after because it’s a cleanser as well. This step is so fast and easy that I have no excuse not to do it.

Take melatonin

Every night I usually take a melatonin (melatonin is what your body natural produces to tell your brain its time to sleep) and because it dissolves under your tongue I usually take it while I do the other tasks in the routine. It’s dissolved by the time I’m done and usually takes about a half hour to kick in. It helps me fall asleep and stay asleep during the night- I personally hate broken sleeps, they always leave me feeling so exhausted. I use Webber Naturals Melatonin Easy Dissolve Sublingual Tablets and I usually buy them in 3mg but they are available in higher dosages.

Let my dog outside/snack a little

I let my dog outside for her last bathroom break before bed and because I’m standing in the kitchen waiting for her to come back inside I usually find a snack or two to munch on before bed. Sleeping on a full tummy is a must for me, I can’t fall asleep if I’m hungry.

Turn on my diffuser

This past Christmas my beautiful girlfriend gifted me an essential oil diffuser and ever since I’ve had it running all night diffusing lavender oil. The smell is so calming and definitely helps me to fall asleep, I also find the noise that it makes really soothing (sort of like calming rainfall). My girlfriend also introduced me to my favourite brand of essential oils by Now Foods, and I get them from my local health + food store, but you can also grab them on Amazon!

Now Lavender Oil Liquid, 30ml this bottle usually lasts me about a month and a half (using 5-6 drops nightly).

Turn on my fan

I’m someone who needs white noise to fall asleep, so no matter what time of year it is you’ll find me sleeping with my fan on.

It’s actually a funny story how that came to be, my girlfriend always needs the fan when she sleeps and so when she started sleeping over at my house I would bring out the fan and turn it on for her. Some how I got so used to it that I found I started to need it too, it’s it funny how those things work when you’re in a relationship?

I have had my Lasko fan since last summer and it is still going strong! Before I got the Lasko I went through stand up fans every couple of months because of how much I use them.

Crawl into bed

At this point I’m usually crawling into my bed and turning out my lamp, snuggling up to my pooch, and grabbing my iPad to stream Netflix.

Turn on F.R.I.E.N.D.S

In light of the white noise, I also need background noise and if you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know I’m the biggest F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan that you’ll ever meet. So there’s no surprise it’s my go to every single night to fall asleep too.

Chug some water

The past week and a bit I’ve been finding myself absolutely craving water before bed, and I’m really trying to do a better job at listening to my body so I oblige and chug some water before I sleep.

Scroll scroll scroll

At this point it’s usually 10:30pm (I know, early bedtime, I’m an old soul okay?) and I usually lay on my phone scrolling on social media or reading blog post. Now this is a habit I need to cut out. I always tell myself that I’m only going to spend a half hour scrolling/reading but more times then not I’ll find myself sucked in and occupied until 12am.

When my girlfriend sleeps over I’m barley on my phone, half the time I don’t even know where it is because I’m just too busy being with her, and I find that because I don’t spend time before bed scrolling I fall asleep so much easier. That and because it’s been scientifically proven that you fall asleep and sleep better next to the person you love.

My bedtime routine is definitely still a work in progress, but I’m making an effort to cut back on my scrolling time- if even by a half hour, each night.

  1. I’ve thought about posting a bedtime routine recently as well!! I love that you posted this because I also have such a consistent routine that I have to do to get a good night’s rest. I’ve never thought about taking melatonin, but that’s such a good idea especially since I wake up pretty exhausted every morning. White noise is a must! I typically just use a white noise machine, but in the summer, we’ll have the machine plus a fan going lol. I literally can’t sleep without the white noise now. Thanks for sharing!!

    1. I would definitely love to read your bedtime routine! Melatonin helps for me & lavender essential oil is a god sent. No white noise = hours trying to fall asleep!!! You should 100% share your bedtime routine I’d love to read it!

  2. Your sleep routine sounds like a dream compared to mine! I try and try to have a routine but I watch my 2 nephews and they like to test their auntie. haha
I start by getting them to go say goodnight to their great grandparents and grandma.
I get them to go to their room, we read 2-5 books (depending on how tired they are or hyper).
I get them to lay down and I put on one movie and by the middle or even sometimes the beginning of the movie, they are both or sometimes one of the boys is knocked out.
When that happens, the T.V. goes off and their night light goes on.
Then this auntie goes to bed, turns on her podcast (I put a sleep timer on it also for 30 mins) and I knock out for the night.
Not the best routine but it works for me. 🙂

  3. I need to have my ipad playing a show at night, too. My boyfriend has adapted this from me like you & the fan! That is so funny how relationships work. & i agree about broken sleep– it’s the worst & makes me so exhausted. It’s def true you sleep better next to a loved one. ♡

  4. I have the habit to stop watching TV and stop using my phone minimum 30mins before going to bed. To make sure I do and to be sure I get into a relaxing mode, I take my shower before going to bed 🙂
