Christmas Pot Luck

Blogmas Day 11

For as long as I can remember every single Boxing Day my family and I would head over to which ever family members house that was hosting Christmas dinner that year. My parents are separated and have been since I was six, so I’ve always had my dinner with my Dad’s side of the family on Boxing Day. When I was really little it was my Nannies house, but as we all got older it typically is held at one of my aunts or my Dads.

We’d have the traditional Christmas spread; turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, etc. And it would always be a super late night with everyone (including myself once I turned of age) enjoying a few drinks.

This year we’re straying away from our tradition, and mixing it up! I hope you guys find it interesting because when I first found out about the change of plans I know I did. Who knows, maybe you’ll even like the idea so much you’ll convince your family to follow suit!

I’m sure you gathered from the title of this Blogmas post that this year we’re doing a Christmas dinner potluck. If you’re not quite sure exactly what a potluck is, it’s a gathering of people where each person brings a different course or side dish. It’s ideal for big parties because there always ends up being a ton of food and a ton of variety.

Being that it’s a Christmas potluck there will of course be a turkey! But aside from that here’s what else is on the menu:

  • ham
  • lasagna
  • mashed potatoes
  • meat and cheese tray
  • scalloped potatoes
  • greek salad
  • chili & dip
  • bruschetta & garlic bread
  • brownies

The extra food will definitely be necessary this year because our close family alone makes up about 15-20 people and this Christmas we’ve extended the invite.

My cousin was in charge of planning the dinner this year and not only invited all of our extended family but rented a hall to house us all for dinner! The hall is local and has a skating rink right next to it that we will definitely be using.

I’m pretty excited to experience Christmas dinner so differently this year. I must say that when I first found out I was a wee bit thrown off- being a girl who loves her traditions, but anytime that I’m with my family is an amazing time and the food will be great!

  1. What a fun idea to have a Christmas potluck!! I love that because then the weight of preparing the meal doesn’t fall on one person! It sounds delicious, and I hope it turns out wonderfully for all of you.
